The ALS bucket challenge seems like ages ago, but the viral fundraising campaign of the summer inspired more than a handful of knock-offs, including a local effort involving tacos and beer to raise money for abortion funds.

In August, Austin writer Andrea Grimes of RH Reality Check launched a Tacos or Beer Challenge in response to the ALS challenge, encouraging people to eat a taco or drink a beer and donate to a nonprofit that helps pay for abortions for people who couldn’t otherwise afford one.

At the height of the campaign, celebrities including Dan Savage, Martha Plimpton and Jesse Tyler Ferguson had participated, and this week, Grimes announced that nearly $30,000 had been donated to dozens of nonprofits around the country and that the fundraiser would return next August.
