It’s officially tamales season in Texas, but making them from scratch isn’t necessarily a project that everybody wants to take on.

You might have a favorite tamales vendor already, but other options for buying them by the dozen include Chumikal’s Cafe, Uncle Julio’s, Fresa’s Chicken Al Carbon, Stiles Switch, Rosie’s Tamales and Mi Ranchito Taqueria in Manchaca.

(Did I leave off your favorite place? Leave a comment or email me at abroyles@statesman.com and I’ll update the post.)

On Saturday, Mi Madre’s and School House Pub are hosting a tamal cooking class from 10 a.m to noon in the kitchen of the pub, 2207 Manor Road, next door to the Mexican eatery that also sells tamales by the dozen. The class ($30) includes a dozen tamales and ponche Navideño (Christmas punch) to liven your spirits. RSVP by calling 512-322-9721.
