For Wheatsville Food Co-op, the only retail food cooperative in Texas, 2014 was biggest year yet for community giving.
The co-op, which has two locations in Austin, announced this week that it donated $150,936 to local groups and non-profits., including People’s Community Clinic, SafePlace, Sustainable Food Center, Ecology Action, Austin Parks Foundation, Green Corn Project, Farmgrass, Amplify Austin, Honk! Texas, Farmshare Austin, Urban Roots, Austin Pets Alive, Hospice Austin, Meals on Wheels & More, Austin Children’s Services and Capital Area Food Bank.
According to the co-op, the largest portion of this money came from its Community Action Wednesday program. Each year, more than 16,000 Wheatsville owners vote for 10 local groups to support from January through October, and each Wednesday, 1 percent of sales goes to the designated non-profit of the month.
Wheatsville’s Raquel Dadomo says that staffers volunteer at the designated non-profit each month, doing things like sorting food at the food bank or playing bingo with kids at the children’s shelter.
