The Jamaica native and founder of a new company called Beyond Salad is hosting an Afro-Latin Fruit Fest from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Pan Am Park, 2100 E. Third St. that will feature live music and lots of tropical fruit.

What’s the connection? They are both fun ways to stay active. “I want people to think creatively about what it means to eat healthfully,” she says. “We want to create a movement that ties together fruit and vegetables, fun and playful fitness, and community. Making healthful changes to your life is more fun when it’s all together, as opposed to just getting people in a classroom, where we lecture them on how to eat more vegetables.”

The free, family-friendly event on Saturday will combine all three of those elements with live music and all kinds of fruit from local vendors. Attendees can expect to try everything from mangoes, papaya, pineapples and banana ice cream to jackfruit, the Asian fruit whose flavor can vary from pod to pod. You can find out more about Beyond Salad at beyondsalad.com.
