I’d heard rumblings that Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery was on the verge of shuttering, which was hard to believe considering how popular their vegan doughnuts seemed to be.
But over the weekend, the worker-owned cooperative, which did not have a storefront, announced that it would be ceasing production.
Here is how they broke the news:
We write with regret to inform you that Red Rabbit Cooperative Bakery will be suspending production and closing down. It has been a privilege to work in the Austin community providing a product that was so well loved by vegans and non-vegans alike. As a worker-owned cooperative, it has been our intention not just to provide high quality, vegan baked goods, but also to provide stable, dignified work and a living wage for our workers. Despite the tremendous support of our loyal customers and the dedication of our workers, in our current circumstances we are unable to meet the increasing demand. For a limited time our donuts will still be available for our customers at Wheatsville Food Co-op. Because we understand how much you enjoy our unique recipe, we are working on a plan to ensure that delicious vegan donuts will remain available in Austin. Thank you again to everyone who has shown us so much love and support for these past five years.
