Austinite Karen MacInerney has made a name for herself as a mystery author with the Agatha-nominated Gray Whale Inn series centered around a character named Natalie Barnes, who is the keeper of the namesake inn. It turns out, Barnes had a roommate in college named Lucy Resnick, who is the leading character in MacInerney’s new mystery series called The Dewberry Farm Mysteries.
The series officially launched this summer with a book called “Killer Jam” (Thomas & Mercer, $15.95), which is filled to the brim with tales of food and farming that Resnick, a former reporter in Houston, encounters after she cashes in her retirement to buy her grandmother’s farm. She dreams of a simple life as a homesteader, but that all changes when a prospector named Nettie Kocurek wants to drill for oil under her fields. When Kocurek is found dead at a festival just a few days later with a jar of Resnick’s jam by her side, the new farmer is suddenly the prime suspect. You’ll have to check out the book to find out what happens next, but you can find out more about MacInerney’s books at karenmacinerney.com.
