If you don’t eat dairy, coconut milk can be a lifesaver.
Coconut yogurts have become more common as more Americans are eating fewer dairy products, and now Austinites have a local option. Erin Asaad’s Kokonut Yogurt (kokonutyogurt.com) launched this summer at the Lakeline and Mueller farmers markets and through Farmhouse Delivery.
It’s a cultured yogurt made from the milk from organic coconuts, and Asaad sells a number of flavors, including a plain that is a good substitute for heavy cream or sour cream in some recipes.
Unlike just about every store-bought yogurt out there, the yogurt was flavored and colored by pureed blueberries, not food coloring or refined sugar, and just a hint of lavender. The other varieties available right now are bourbon vanilla and strawberry rose, and they cost $8 to $9 for an 8 oz. container.
