“No chewing on the boot.”
That’s the sign that greeting attendees at Friday morning’s Cowboy Breakfast, the annual kick-off for Rodeo Austin that drew hundreds of Austinites, many wearing boots, others wearing office attire, to the Long Center Terrace today.
Kristy Kreme and Farm Credit Bank of Texas teamed up to create a Texas flag-themed boot made out of colored doughnuts. You could get your photo taken in front of the boot, but they didn’t let you eat the doughnuts until the end of the breakfast.
You could also get freshly cooked biscuits and gravy from a team of chuckwagon cooks, freshly made pancakes and syrup, sausage wraps and even fried catfish strips called catfish toes. Some folks were dancing to the live music, while others were getting photos on top of a horse or with the trick roper. You could even try your hand at branding a piece of leather. (Don’t forget that there’s a barbecue competition happening later today and tomorrow at the Travis County Exposition Center, the home of the rodeo)
Just how much do Austinites love doughnuts? We have a 24-hour Voodoo Doughnuts downtown and Hook ‘Em doughnuts that got into legal troubles last year, not to mention several locations of Gourdough’s, a doughnut-based trailer and restaurant.
