Rain or shine, here’s where to pick blueberries this month

Pick-your-own strawberry season is coming to a close, but that means blueberries are around the corner.

Pick-your-own blueberries are a thing of beauty, if you can find them. In Central Texas, there are a few blueberry farms that will be open for picking in coming weeks. Addie Broyles / American-Statesman

At Chickamaw Farm in McDade, they are already ready, so from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 20, you can head out there to pick a few pints. The farm is open at other times this month, but on Saturday, Farmhouse Delivery is providing complimentary breakfast tacos and coffee. Chickamaw is Texas’ only certified biodymanic farm, and it also sells grass-fed beef. You can email or call (chickamaw@gmail.com, 512-567-3456) for more info about when is good to come out to pick.

In a few weeks, blueberries should be ready at Kingsbury Blueberry Farm in Caldwell, which has 100 bushes of organically grown blueberries that you can pick June through part of July.  Bring your own bucket, basket or container. Call for an appointment: 979-567-9138 Open: 8:30 a.m. to noon daily, closed Sunday.
