Need a post-workout doughnut? This company has you covered

Doughnuts aren’t something you usually see on an athlete’s meal plan.

They are usually high in sugar and fat and, though, delicious, don’t have much nutritional value.

Elite Sweets’ debut product is this dark chocolate-covered doughnut that has 16 grams of protein, 2 grams sugar and 8 grams fat. Contributed by Elite Sweets.

Why not make a better doughnut? That was the thought behind a business idea from Amir and Amin Bahari, co-founders of an Austin-based company who love doughnuts and knew there was a way to make them not only healthier, but good for you.

They teamed up with former University of Texas basketball player Kerwin Roach and Caleb Bluiett, who played football, to launch Elite Sweets, whose debut product is a “performance protein donut.” (I usually write “doughnut” only because the Associated Press tells me to, and I use quotes around the whole phrase because I don’t know what performance protein is.)

Each gluten-free, dark chocolate-covered doughnut has 15-16 grams of protein, most of which comes from whey protein, egg whites, Greek yogurt and almond flour, and 165 calories. It’s sweetened with stevia, so it’s low in sugar (2 grams), and the doughnuts are baked, not fried, so lower in fat (8 grams).

I haven’t yet tried them, so no promises on flavor, but now you know where to go to get your post-workout doughnut.

You can buy them online ($9 for a 3-pack) or at three Austin retail outlets: D’lites Ice Cream & Bakery (4404 W. William Cannon Dr.), Buda Protein Weight Loss Center (825 Main St. in Buda) and Defiant CrossFit (16801 Radholme Court in Round Rock). This week, the company launched a Go Fund Me to expand.
