About a decade ago, when social media and food blogging was just getting started in Austin, a fella who went by the online name Scrumptious Chef knew all the best food news before anybody.
RL Reeves Jr. ate everywhere. He knew all the right people. He blogged about his own recipes and stories and other cooks’ recipes and stories, and occasionally, he’d host a pop-up dinner honoring Texas women or with Terlingua-worthy chili.
A handful of years ago, Reeves, a veteran of the local food industry, left Austin and took his blog with him to Louisiana, where he continues to chronicle the people, food and culture of the area, but this week, he’s back for a pop-up dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Tamale House East, 1707 E. Sixth St.
On the menu is no less than what he’s calling “the finest gumbo ever served in the Great State,” and I’m inclined to believe him. He’s been eating gumbo in every parish in Louisiana since he moved here, learning from cooks “in Bayou Lafourche, Chackbay, New Iberia, Grand Chenier, Vermillion, Rapides, Terrebonne, St John The Baptist and all points in between.”
The gumbo costs $12 and bread pudding will be $5. Beer and cocktails are also available.
If you buy a ticket through the website, you’ll get $5 in food credit when you get there.
