Eat chili, get your two-step on at Jo’s annual cook-off on Sunday

Jo’s Coffee on South Congress hosts one of the best chili cook-offs in Austin each spring. (OK, it’s not really spring, but on these 85-degree days, you’ll have to forgive me…)

Joel Gammage and Carissa Hatcher tear a hole in the dance floor at the Jo’s Chili Cook-off that takes place in February. This year’s event is on Feb. 12. Laura Skelding/AMERICAN-STATESMAN

The 11th annual Jo’s Chili Cook-Off is taking place from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday in the parking lot that the coffee shop shares with the Hotel San Jose. Cooks from local restaurants — and even a hot sauce company — will be making up their best batches of chili to compete for a trophy chili pot, Yeti coolers and cases of Shiner beer.

One of the best parts of this event is the dancing that takes place in front of the stage they set up in the parking lot. This year, dancers will be two-stepping to their hearts’ content with Jeff Hughes and Chapparal.

The contestants include Yellowbird Hot Sauce, Banger’s, Contigo, chef John Bullington and Fresa’s. The event is free to check out, but if you want to taste chili, you’ll have to buy a $20 wristband, whose proceeds benefit Urban Roots.
